A new musical for families has hit the stage, presenting an ice cold twist on a classic fairytale.

Cinderella Ice Cream Seller tells the story of how Cinderella, once a humble ice cream maker with not a penny to her name, built a thriving ice cream empire. The musical follows Talvi and Caldwell, loyal employees of the Cinderella Ice Cream Company, as they unravel the tale of Cinderella’s journey from rags to riches, while exploring their own hopes, dreams, and the magic of ice cream.

A delightful blend of storytelling, music, and theatrical magic, this show promises to captivate audiences young and old.

Written and composed by David Gibb and directed by Tristan Jackson-Pate, the show has been hailed as “Operation Mincemeat meets Nick Cope” (Daily Info), with the songs described as “catchy and immensely tuneful – worthy of a Disney movie soundtrack” (Newbury Today).

Audiences will be whisked away to a magical world filled with ice cream parlors, royal balls, and enchanted glass slippers.

The production opened at The Story Museum’s Woodshed Theatre in Oxford for a two-week run over Christmas 2024, before heading out on tour across the UK to venues including the Lyric Hammersmith, artsdepot, Barnsley Civic, ARC, Brighton Dome and The New Vic Theatre.

Its success continued at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2025, where it was shortlisted for Best Kids Show at The List Awards and won glowing praise from critics and audiences alike:
“A whimsical reimagining of Cinderella turns the classic tale into a song-filled journey of entrepreneurship, flavour, and fairy tale reinvention. Narrated by two quirky ice cream parlour employees, the show charms with brilliant songs, colourful staging, and a generous helping of comedy for both kids and adults.” — The Scotsman

“Harthorpe and Gibb give top-notch performances, slipping silkily between multiple roles… The script, meanwhile, has a Roald Dahl feel, garish and vivid in its characters, dastardly in its comic mischief.” — The List ★★★★★

The show has been written by composer, songwriter, and children’s author David Gibb, who also performs the role of Caldwell.

On his inspiration behind the show Gibb says: “I was really interested in how much of a role ice cream plays in our lives and how it’s so universally enjoyed by almost everyone. It’s there for us at every occasion, whether it’s an ice cream sundae for a birthday celebration, a 99 with a Flake on holiday by the sea, or a great big tub of Ben & Jerry’s to ease a broken heart.

I had so much fun exploring all of this through the story of Cinderella, adding lots of changes and unexpected twists and turns, but still retaining the best parts of the original tale. It’s also a story about being brave, learning to work together, and listening and learning from people who are different from you and I’m really proud of the message the show delivers.”

Perfect for fans of musicals and ice creams alike, this exciting new show is sure to capture your heart and tickle your taste buds.
