Z-arts Presents Duck!
A Christmas show made especially for
a Manchester audience.
10 – 23 December 2013
“A production that can stand proudly alongside the Christmas fare from any of the well-known Manchester rep companies from a venue that many people in the city probably haven’t even heard of” – British Theatre Guide
A modern, urban take on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale The Ugly Ducking, Duck! is written by 2013 Writers Guild Award Winner Philip Osment. The show was originally staged at London’s Unicorn Theatre where it received rave reviews, Osment has rewritten the show for a Manchester audience, moving it’s setting from Hampstead Heath to Manchester’s Heaton Park. Z-arts identified Duck! as the perfect follow up to last year’s beloved Pinocchio and an ideal fit for our ambition to produce high quality, contemporary children and family theatre.
The show is a fast paced tale following the adventures of Ugly, an outcast ducking searching for his identity and purpose in an overwhelming word. Along the way he must overcome squabbling siblings, a sly fox and all manner of fowl things. Ugly’s story runs parallel with that of Zach, a young boy coming to terms his parents’ separation, until one Christmas when their lives collide. Duck! is a heartfelt family story for a modern Mancunian audience.
Director Julia Samuels (20 Stories High) once again teams up with Osment to reunite the award winning team behind Whole. Duck! is an entirely new production created and rehearsed at Z-arts featuring 7 performers (who play 36 different characters!) and original music and beatboxing from Jason Singh. Singh takes influences from Dubstep and Hip-hop and remixes them with Swan Lake to create a unique soundscape to be performed live by the actors on stage. Duck! is a truly contemporary theatre experience for children and families.
Performing are Nathan Morris, Remmie Milner, Darren Kuppan, Sipho Dubula, Jim Pope, Curtis Cole and Isabel Ford.
The show is designed by Sophia Lovell-Smith (20 Stories High) and the creative team is completed by Aideen Malone (Lighting); Tom Hogan (Movement), Darren Pritchard (Choreography).
“Here at Z-arts it is our mission to stage shows which will spark children’s imagination and inspire their creativity. To achieve this, our children and family shows are lovingly crafted with the same high quality production standards as any show produced for an adult audience.
At first it was hard to find a play that we could produce to follow Pinocchio, but then I found Duck! Rewritten by award-winning children’s writer Philip Osment, it’s the very familiar tale of The Ugly Duckling. Osment has adapted the play especially for a Manchester audience, resetting its location to our very own Heaton Park with themes that will speak to contemporary children and their families.” – Z-arts CEO and Producer Liz O’ Neill
